Summary
I speak in the first online session of the Innovation to Impact Leadership Lab on Thursday, 1 October 2026, 13:30–14:30 CET — a short power speech on “AI and the Future of Work”, answering the question the programme put to me: how should we respond when AI changes what people and organisations are capable of?
The session runs as a sequence of three speaker perspectives followed by small-group work. So this is deliberately not a broad AI overview — it is one sharp argument, a few strong examples, and questions the room has to answer in writing rather than nod at.
The argument runs in three dependent steps. Value — some work is going to zero because it can be parallelised, and some cannot, and the uncomfortable version of that sentence is that many organisations currently charge for the first kind. Agency — the part that does not go to zero is naming the objective, deciding how it will be measured, and setting the boundaries, which is writable work and therefore teachable. Agents — automation scales with compute, but only where the result is cheaply checkable, which makes verification the constraint rather than capability. The mental model underneath is a stack of loops the field is filling from the bottom up: prediction, then agents with tools, then automation, then experiments.

About IPIP
The Innovation Policy Ignition Programme (IPIP) grew out of a pattern its programme team saw repeatedly across regions: talent, ideas and entrepreneurial drive were not the scarce inputs. Innovation was already happening. What was missing was a structured, collaborative way to align those efforts with the region’s broader goals. IPIP was designed to bring policymakers, academics, entrepreneurs and investors together to co-develop focused, action-oriented plans, helping regions strengthen collaboration, build capacity and use the innovation potential they already have.
The programme is action-oriented by construction. Each participating region works toward a concrete regional innovation action plan, stronger coordination between the actors in its ecosystem, and access to international expertise and networks. Regional teams are supported by academic leaders and practitioners whose expertise spans entrepreneurship, innovation, organisational transformation and cross-sector collaboration, and the programme’s advisory group is made up of Hughes Hall Fellows together with external stakeholders.
